I find that being around 3500-4500 RPM gives me a better sense of control. I know that the tires don't know what gear I am in, so it must be the 'sweet' spot in the torque curve that gives me the instant throttle response and feeling of control.
Heck, I even find that driving an automatic around town in 3rd instead of D gives a more responsive throttle and the same kind of feeling of control.
