Got my sludge warranty letter from Saab yesterday. Seems they want a lot of documentation of dealer service for oil changes before they will consider issuing you the extended engine warranty becuase of the sludge problems.
I expect that this will be a battle with them as I do all of my own oil and oil filter changes myself (with the exception of the major 36K service). They want receipts to prove that if the dealer didn't do the oil changes somebody else did. Now if I do them myself and I don't keep the receipts from Pep Boys where I purchase the oil and filters from, and I don't generate my own receipts since I don't pay myself to do my own oil changes and other maintenance, where does this leave me? I can already hear the Saab legal department wheels rolling on this one getting themselves out of extending the warranty on my engine. Here I thought they were doing the right thing until I got the paperwork yesterday.
Interestingly enough I STILL haven't received a letter telling me to change the oil more frequently than 10,000 miles...I guess that would be too much proof of liability for Saab to deal with. Maybe a new page to stick on the warranty book or the owner's manual would have been a good idea.
They really tip-toe around the real crux of the problem in the packet of paperwork they sent by saying "if you do a lot of towing", "if you do a lot of stop and go driving", "if if if ....". They don't just come out and say that the design of the engine didn't lend itself to 10,000 mile oil change intervals so change the oil every 5000 miles (which I do anyway since I thought that 10000 miles was way too long even with FULLY synthetic oil).
Good thing is that I keep a service record book with an entry for every time I put gas in the car, rotate tires, put summer or winter tires on, or do any repairs or maintenance on the car. Hopefully that will be enough "proof" that the oil and oil filter changes were done at 2x the recommended frequency.
Saab even goes so far as to say that they want me to retain "the high confidence that I presently have for their products" in their packet of paperwork. This brought a smile to my face. I'm way past that at this point. Apparently it's all about CYA at Saab these days. GM has another mess to deal with.
What a shame.
