Yes I think that is one of the major mistakes that time is not mentioned that much (or at all) in the Saab booklets.
It seems they assume people are driving so many miles per year that time don't need to be considered.
But very few miles over long period of time is usually a result of lots of short trips and cold start ups and short trips/coldstarts are not good for the oil or engine.
6 month is what I recommend between changes.
If you drive 10K in 6 month you are probably a good candidate for 10K changes if your engine is not burning any oil or very little.
If you drive 5K in 6 month it is still a good idea to change the oil at the 6 month mark.
If you drive 3K (or even less) in 6 month you should definitely have the oil change every 6 month.
I drive 3K per year and change the oil every 6 month. It is pretty bad looking when I drain it at 1500 miles.
