You rarely hear about the slave cylinders failing on this board, although it does happen, and if it was an issue, I'm sure we'd hear about it. Generally people seem to replace the slave cylinder when they replace the clutch, and that happens before the cylinders typically give out. I didn't give it a second thought when I went with the hydraulic upgrade, and I'd do it again.
