When my '95 900S had about 100K miles, I was expiriencing a crunchy feeling when I pressed in the clutch. Also, every so often as I pushed the pedal, it would feel like it got hung up on something about halfway down. I had my mechanic change the cable (he insisted it was NOT the cable). He was right, after a $1200 clutch job it turns out it was the throwout bearing. He even said that the clutch plate actually had quite a bit more life left on it.

I think some folks have had luck lubricating the bearing without tearing into the transmission.
