I used to teach a lot of people to drive 5 speeds back in the eighites when I sold Hondas and VW's. A typical scenario would be for them to come rolling up to a stop light in 4th or 5th with the clutch in. Suddenly the light turns before they get a chance to stop and they typically wouldn't instinctively know what gear to shift to. By rowing through the gears and thinking in terms of always being in a usable gear, they learn what gears to be in at what speeds. Once they get it down they can start taking shortcuts. In most stop and go situations you're only talking about two or three gears anyway, and I've never heard of any wear issues associated with shifting through the gears.
