We have an '02 9-3 SE and an '06 93SS and we like each. My wife (5'3")likes the newer version because of the width, better heat and interior. I agree that it gets better fuel economy, handles better around curves and is generally more reliable. However, for me at 6' tall, the newer car is too low to the ground, not as comfortable for my height, and has a choppy ride. I prefer the hatchback '02 model for a better ride, better driver position, more SAAB-like, less imposing A pillar, hatchback feature, better ground clearance, etc. Drivers of the older version must be vigilant about oil levels due to leaks and oil changing due to the potential for sludging but they can achieve over 200,000 miles on the original engine with proper care.
The older model owners in the northeast must also be vigilant about under body and wheel wheel rust while the later models (even the '03 models) seem to be very good on rust prevention so far.
