I have had both: a 2001 9-3 SE, and I currently own a 2006 9-3 SC and a 2010 9-3 SS.
The '01 was my wife's baby and we have lots of fond memories of that car. Many great roadtrips, etc. It was truly a near-luxury car. The leather was high quality, the dash had a nice feel, and we could've subleased the trunk as a studio apartment. Even used the deck lid as a baby changing table on the road. On the downside, there was way too much flex in the body (but that could've been fixed with some aftermarket stuff).
The '06 has been an excellent car with not much beyond normal maintenance. It handles better than the '01 did, but the 'feel' of the interior is not in the same league. The engine seems to have much less turbo lag than the '01 did too and I love the smoothness of the engine. Both the '01 (Steel Grey) and the '06 (Parchment Silver) are / were beautiful cars.
Our '10 9-3 is also an excellent car and appears quieter and seems to handle better than the '06. Even at 78K miles it still feels 'new.' Gas mileage is outstanding with the 6-spd manual. I don't much care for the Fusion Blue but the car looks great in the evening the way the headlights and taillights are configured.
If I had to do it again, I'd get a 2008 and newer SportCombi, though a brand new '01 9-3 would be tempting too. Unfortunately, finding one of those is impossible.
