high/fluctuating idle - the continuing saga Posted by MJM [Email] (#872) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MJM) on Wed, 24 Jan 2001 09:13:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Has anyone had problems with the idle speed on an SET? Mine has been intermitently acting up for the last year+. Yesterday was typical: start the car after work, immediately goes to 2200 rpm. I cringe. I blip the throttle a time or two to see if something is sticking. No change. I sit for a minute, then start driving out of the parking lot. I'm able to use first and second gear without touching the throttle. On the drive home, whenever the revs are over 2000 and my foot is off the gas, the up-shift light is on, and I don't feel any engine braking. When I put in the clutch, the car idles at about 1800. The temp gauge is just below the 9 o'clock position when I get home 10 minutes later, behavior hasn't changed. I pull in my driveway, put the car in neutral, set the parking brake, still 1800 rpm, I get out to open the garage door, and the idle drops to normal (~1100) and stays there.
Sometimes while I'm driving I'll notice a lack of engine braking, or if I'm in a lower gear, the up-shift light will come on. This condition clears itself roughly half the time as I continue to drive along. Does not seem related to hitting bumps in the road.
The dealer has spent several hours with the car, and can never duplicate the behavior. No codes are stored. They replaced the IAC valve over the summer, but the condition remains. I asked about the DI cassette and was told it was fine. New plugs did not change the behavior.
It kind of sounds like a loose connection somewhere, but I would expect that to light the check engine light.
This is driving me nuts and is the major source of my dissatisfaction with the car.
Any thoughts?
thanks in advance,
Mike
