You forgot to add:
Check the clutch cable, if it has one. These things wear out regularly(30-60K).
Also, look at the idler pully and belt (60K).
I bought a 97 900 S convertable with 50K miles on it in Feb.
My list of repairs
Battery
Serpentine Belt
idler pulley
clutch cable
clutch
all brake pads
fix the emergency brake
adjust the shifter
replace the SID
I estimate this has cost me about $3,000 in repairs. It is going to take me 2 years before I can get the loan amount down far enough to sell it. Oh and it isn't a Turbo which makes it perform like good looking convertable escort.
Major service on my Jetta came around once every 5 years. Major service on the Saab this year seems to show up once every 5 days. But if you want a lux car you have to pay big bucks (Porsche, Mercedes, BMW are all the same) You would just think you would get something more for your money. Like reliability. Hell I think I should have bought a mustang. Any grease monkey can work on them and the parts last twice as long and cost 1/3 as much. I spend my free time trying to remember why I though the saab was a good idea.
Total repair costs on my Jetta < $1,000 over 6 years of ownership (not counting routine maintance)
