A 4x4 without traction control or ABS can be very tricky in a low traction situation. They can usually get going pretty well in snow but most people forget that they don't stop any better than anything else.
There are two causes for a skid; the wheels are turning faster than the actual speed of the vehicle or they are turning slower. The latter can be a scare in a 4x4 because when you take your foot off the gas all 4 wheels engine brake and it's very easy to get sideways. Been there, done that, got the soiled shorts.
