Thanks for the compliment. Glad to have you around. You provide a wealth of info on both Saab and non-Saab matters,
The tires are not original by any means. The original fronts went at 12K and Saab/Pirelli replaced them, prorated of course. I had a problem and changed the rears. Then the four new tires came off and the winter wheels went on. The tires that you interpreted as having 37K had about 12K on them when they failed.
As for covering every contingency, an ordinary spring/damper cannot do that. This is why some sort of load leveling should have been standard. I am not sure what the GVWR actually means in terms of the required performance of the car at this load level. I doubt that it means as long as the car holds together, everything is ok. In my case, a blowout occurred and I do not consider this acceptable by any means. The matter is made worse by Saab not recommended higher tire pressure when the car is fully loaded on the 02+ labels (the label only refers to speed). Although with the camber as negative as it is on my car, even higher pressures do not help much.
I agree that one can easily overload a car. I weighed everything that came out of the car on a household scale. I added 10% plus my weight and I was still well under the load limits. In addition, this weight was scattered all over the car as opposed to the worst case of the driver plus the remaining load in the trunk.
If Saab wants, they can take a new Aero wagon and put it on an alignment rack with a 200 lb driver and the remaining 730 lbs in the trunk. I bet the rear camber is well out of spec in such a situation on a brand new car. It is simply not acceptable.
Back to the questions, is there any official upgrade policy on warranty work? I reread the 03 warranty. I could not find a discussion of wear items that fail due to a covered part failing. Since it is not excluded I can only assume that it is covered. I will see what the dealer has to say on Monday since I didn’t even address tires yet.
What effect would excessive bottoming have? I can’t think of any such event. The dealer said nothing looked unusual in the rear end. Only conclusion they could come too was a worn out rear suspension. I sure hope I don’t need springs every 40K.
