K & N and BPC valves

I had a long chat with Dean at eEuroparts on this topic when they replaced my 3 month old BPC under warranty. (I'd bought it before the warranty was shortened.)
He said they (and other suppliers) were seeing shortened BPC life and that study of the returned valves (by the manufacturer, apparently) showed up dirt and grit in the valves. Further investigation found that the majority of the bad valves were on cars with K&N or other high-air-flow air cleaners, modified air boxes or both. The incidence was much higher than in cars with stock intake systems. This makes sense because the BPC is effectively in the airstream and can suck in some grit that could cause it to clog, stick, jam, whatever.
So run a K & N, but be aware that it may shorten BPC valve life (at $200 a pop), but remember that unless you do other stuff to the engine any gain in performance is probabaly more imagined than real.
