Air filters & oil filters

I'd say I find as much dirt in my K&Ns as I've found in my paper filters. Of course, the dirt has a completely different appearance. Also, the 9³'s smaller filter accumulates gunk a lot quicker than the 3X larger C900's. And I agree, the 9³'s multi-fit dilemma is undesireable & should be corrected by K&N.
Re-oiling can be tricky, but it's definitely workable. I think the low silicon numbers in my previous UOA link prove that these filters stop dirt very well. Of course, besides having a much larger filtering area (reducing the pressure across the entire media surface), my C900 is not turbocharged, so air speeds are naturally slower for my engine.
The other side of the filtering coin is the oil filter. Many of us are using premium oil filters in the belief that finer filtering (providing cleaner oil) will prolong engine life. The opposing oil filter camp says increasing oil flow with coarser filtering (allowing dirtier oil) is more important to prolonging engine life. I think the air/oil filters should be chosen according to which camps you're in. High flow air with fine filtering oil? Fine filtering air with high flow oil? Some other combo? In any case, I think a bigger oil filter always helps keep dirt out of the oil. A bigger air filter would help too, but it's harder to gain 50% more dirt capturing by dropping in a larger air filter than it is to spin on a (matched) larger oil filter.
