I used to race dirt bikes in the high desert of southern california. most dirt bikes have an "oiled foam" airfilter setup from the factory. In the dusty conditions we rode it was common to have a ton of dirt caked on the oiled filter. You really *had* to wash the foam and then re-oil before every outing. If you didn't one of two things would happen, either it would start sucking garbage into the carb, or it would suck more gas and run rich. Neither was a good thing. I had buddies that put the K&N filer on their trucks used to go to the pits. They also noted that the filter needed regular (they thought extra) maintenance. There were K&N filters available for my dirtbike, but they required removable of the stock airbox and just bolting the filter on the carberator. I stayed stock and didn't suffer for it.

The truck guys went back to box stock filters and housings, they were having too many issues with the K&N.

Basically, I think for most (unless you are really into doing preventative maintenance on your air filter) and are trying to get that last couple of numbers out of your motor, go stock and do something else with that time/money. Unless you are tearing everything down after each event like the real racers are doing. Do exhaust things, see JAK, but something that isn't a timesync.

but then again your experinece may be different!
