Many many years ago I was advised to get my 4 year engineering degree and along the way make sure I got the prerequisite premed courses. It was relatively easy, only having to take a lot more chemistry than mechanical engineers have to.

I got sidetracked by Viet Nam and out before the Medical College of the Armed Forces was began in 1973 or so, but it seems to me that would still be a good way to go.

The four year degree puts you in a different group than all the premed students competing against each other. Also, at Minnesota, if I had chosen to go back to med school after Viet Nam, the contacts I had made in the engineering labs might have helped.

Long and short, a four year degree in something including all the pre med courses goes a long way toward med school and you only lose one year to the three year obsessive students.

One more thing...several of the doctors I know aren't all that keen on the biz anymore, what with the government and insurance providers mucking it up. We're not that far away from socialized medicine, either. Seems a lot of the characteristics of doctors are similar to those of entrepreneurs or even venture capitalists. The defining factor seems to be the need for human contact...a factor that works well in the business/venture world. Along the way if your daughter picks up an MBA it won't hurt. Private practises are often sold, merged, enlarged, etc., and there's a lot of satisfaction later in a medical career of managing a group practice well.
