Reliability doesn't sell NEW cars Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 13:02:21 In Reply to: Re: Which raises the question..., AeroBaron, Mon, 24 Aug 2009 12:33:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Looks, features, feel, looks, shine, hype, color, looks, features, emotions, looks, image, etc. are what sells NEW cars. Purchasers make decisions with a large emotional factor, overruling the quantitive side of the brain. Other than several friends who insist on buying Toyota Corollas and Camrys for their legendary reliability (hey, we're engineers and obvious outliers on the societal continuum!), I don't know anyone who has recently purchased a car based solely on perceived reliability. A European car, even the reimaged VW, is now perceived as a luxury, something to move up to after you attain a certain place in life.
The story is very different for used cars, with most Japanese brands retaining a much larger percentage of their value a few years out - probably based on the perceived cost of future maintenance.
