The wear items are going to need replacing in any car. That's why they're called "wear items." And if a car is used harder they will need replacement more often. That's OK.
But the supporting cast of stuff... things like window switch packs, pixels in SID-type displays, heater cores, etc., should just plain last. That stuff isn't affected by how hard the car is used. And it does seem as if the Japanese just do this stuff better.
OTOH...
reliability is sort of relative. Most of us find our Saabs very reliable, but will admit there are often a few things that typically need fixing but don't really affect use of the car. Does that happen on Japanese cars? Probably, especially as they age, but we don't necessarily know about it. Then there's the bigger, spendier issues, like sludged engines and turbos that don't last along as one would like. Different story. But does that have to be the cost of driving something more fun and interesting? I don't think it has to be this way. More expensive to own and maintain is one thing, having big dollar repairs at an early age is not.
And yeah, the Infiniti G35/37 are pretty appealing. (Still no hatch, though!)
