that the problem is endemic in the population, both left and right and almost every shade in between. I'm not even sure what to call it, perhaps just gullibility to all sorts of free-lunch-theories ;-) For example:

The left believe that there is a "free lunch" to feed, clothes, shelter, educate and cure all those who can not earn enough through their own labor to pay for it . . . that somehow a centralized clearing house staffed men and women in government costumes is just the way to deliver all that . . . without realizing that food, clothing, shelter, education and medicine were all free once upon a time, for slaves! Free on the terms of the slave owners and foremen. Freemen who wanted quality service and goods on their own terms, i.e. the power to choose, had to pay for them, so that they were not ripped off by the costly "middlemen" like the slave owners, foremen, and bureaucrats.

The neo-cons believe the "free lunch" in having our way around the world, taking whatever we want and mess up the rest, all without backlashes and consequences. They don't seem to realize the high cost of military subsidy to doing business overseas would send American jobs overseas . . . or that if the US is indeed the strongest power everywhere in the world (not just within the US, i.e. effective defense), then the US would become the UN (that the neo-cons hate so much) as all sorts of foreigners would be trying to buy off American politicians in order to use that power in their own corner of the world.

Even the many "small government" types have a blind spot on issues like immigration, as if such enforcement would not involve a new vast self-perpetuating bureaucracy that specializes in intruding upon personal liberty and breaking up mutually beneficial free market exchanges.
