Noel stated 100% truth, and it's actually somewhat of an understatement.
There are those who insist that google = govt; OK, whatever...
I ask instead:
Does that really matter anymore ?
Any and everything which travels via ANY public data net is NON-PRIVATE; this has become a fact of life and fighting this fact is quite futile.
Regarding gmail specifically=> they have the BEST spam filtering of ANY email service now in existence, and that is mostly why I stay with them.
(They are also as close to fully, 100% reliable as anything is nowadays.)
I have my own domains too, and gigs of hosting, but my most important email addresses are mapped to the google apps email services BY CHOICE.
As far as being tracked is concerned - ALL webmail providers spy on their users, again - this is merely a fact of life.
To reduce the spying effectively, you may wish to try browser extensions like Ghostery, Flashblock, RefreshBlocker and/or even a 3rd party ad-remover (there's a new freeware one that comes highly recommended).
Aside of the above, the single biggest anti-tracking strategy is very simple:
In searching, avoid EVER using google unprotected; instead use Ixquick, Scroogle, or StartPage.com to hide your movements behind.
You can also just use DuckDuckGo via SSL instead of google - there's plenty of non-tracking search options right now.
Best Wishes.
