In addition to notifying the card issuer you should read the fine print. The greedier credit/charge/ATM card issuers take 3% or more as a foreign transaction fee. The better ones only charge 1%. The four digit PIN is a necessity.

The reason U.S. banks won't issue cards with chips is that they are easy prey for remote reading devices, therefore more prone to identity theft and fraudulent charges
