Like others, I had never heard of using PVC.
Per the 2006 International Mechanical Code, it has to be metal, at least 4" dia, with a maximum developed length of 25'. You also have to count each 90 elbow as 5'. Since you'll have at least (2) 90's, and you're rising up at least 8' to begin with, you have perhaps 7' allowable horizontal distance.
[Disclaimer: this code is Commercial, but for Domestic clothes dryers, and I would guess the Residential to be similar. They probably do allow 3", but I doubt if PVC or too much farther.]
One of the other posters mentioned screwed together, but screws are bad, they give something for the lint to collect on. I would recommend short-as-possible pop rivets (only 1 or two per joint), or short screws and Aluminum Duct Tape (I love that stuff). Add supports to compensate for fewer fasteners.
There are booster fans available for dryers, but they're not cheap, and have additional requirements.
