At any point, at any time, at any merchant you run the risk of having the numbers stolen. It could be an bad employee or it could be one of the skimming devices mounted on the gas pump completely unknowing for the owner of the station.
That's just reality.
Thank God for US and the great credit card protection most credit card companies offers here compared to other countries where it is more up to the individual to prove them wrong while you are out the money.
I still use cash for daily stuff or the credit card for other shopping but try to stay away from using my debit card with PIN just because of the ramifications of if they get a hold of it.
Just a year or so ago, AMEX sent me an e-mail and called and asked if I was at Hooters in Reno while at the same time buying air line tickets in London outbound to India.
Well, Hooters I could go with but darn it if I would ever buy a ticket in London to go to India.
A few phone calls and a couple of papers to fill out and everything was taken care of.
Great service from AMEX.
