HUP sounds like a great deal if that is a benefit at your work. The full retail version is still ludicrously expensive for what it is, and that may only get worse as MS moves to an "online" business model: they no longer want you to buy Office, but rather a 365 day license to use it remotely... so an annual fee. Good idea from a revenue continuance perspective, not at all appealing to me even if the price is < the full install. My impression was that they basically want to ditch all the "piracy" issues of the past. I suppose there is a fine line to tread between being a profitable company and irritating your customers!
Anyway, I agree, Office had much of what it needed in '96, 2000 had a few minor improvements. This machine has 2007, and I use it, but hate the "new" UI, but need it for compatibility reasons. Most of my own isolated work I still do on a computer running an older version (and those files are readable on 2007+)... MS changed the file formats in 2007 to allow better data mining. I think unless you need that capability, need to work with others that need that capability, or prefer the UI, I wouldn't bother upgrading... however, probably many need to work with new files by now (me anyway)... frustrating, but life... If there was a highly compatible alternative, I would be interested in trying it! With the more open formats, that might start to become reality... who knows?
