bigger processors etc need more power and get hotter. Hotter generally means more fans heatsink size and space... not great for an all in one product. The NUC stuff coming out should hopefully make it easier to get a completely fanless i3 or i5 that you can bolt to the back of a monitor. I don't care about bolting to the monitor, but I've got 1 silent pc now and will never buy another pc that isn't dead quiet! For many, HD speed is more of a factor in terms of speed of use than processor power, so a low power anemic processor can be ok with a SSD.
I haven't had much trouble with windoze 8 (I can ignore the annoying UI "features" like the app store crap)... but any new hardware is going to start to *need* it... I can't imagine selling an all-in-one today without a touch screen... which would basically need 8 to be fully capable. Maybe she should take some time to come up to speed on the new UI? Does her laptop have touch? Maybe that would help?
