It may or may not last as long but when you consider how inexpensive refrigerators have become versus decades ago (adjusting for inflation), you can buy multiple for what one cost back then.
In the late 1970s, a 17 cu. ft. top freezer Kenmore sold for the equivalent of about $1,600 in current dollars. A larger 18 cu. ft. top freezer Kenmore today can be had for 1/3 that or even less...plus there's all of the efficiency benefits discussed in other posts.
