My total gas bill last month was $6.93. My gas bill for March was $12.xx. My gas bill from February (one of the coldest months here) was $80.xx. I don't really ever note my usage, since the bottom line is what really matters. ;)
My gas is from Pacific Gas & Electric, one of the worst companies on the face of the planet. The guys that blew up San Bruno. A corporate history of mismanagement and abuse. They've been constantly raising rates *and* dodging corporate responsibility, which is pretty awesome.
Our electricity is "SMUD" - Sacramento Municipal Utility District, a publicly owned company. This post made me confirm something before typing it, and apparently my disdain for PG&E's bullshit behavior goes way back:
"Created by a vote of Sacramento County residents on 2 July 1923 pursuant to the Municipal Utility District Act,[3][4] SMUD's ability to provide power to its customer-owners was stymied in the courts for nearly a quarter century by the investor-owned Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) of San Francisco.[5] A court ruling eventually sided with SMUD, which began providing power at the beginning of 1946."
SMUD is a fairly decent company - they have some government-esque attributes which make them difficult to deal with, but corporately they have good policies about pricing and energy sourcing. I really appreciate being a SMUD customer, up to including their commitment to renewable energy. Hell, I pay an extra five bucks or something every month to ensure my power is comes from renewable sources. It's a small investment for a good cause.
