Advice on places to move to....

My wife and I have lived in New England all our lives and with the kids up and gone we are thinking about the next move. We want less winter (basically warmer and less snow), and for now the east coast makes the most sense because we have a second home in Nova Scotia where we'll be spending 5-6 months of the year once we semi-retire in 2 more years.
Right now we are thinking of the Carolinas, maybe eastern Tennessee or perhaps Virginia. No further south than S. Carolina as we'd like to keep the drive to Nova Scotia down to 2 days. The right place in Maryland or Delaware might be an option. We'd buy a condo or small house.
I'm looking for any input on these areas and others people have some experience with. I have friends in Cary and Waxhaw, NC, one in Delaware, but not other places. We are not interested in Florida or Georgia.
All thoughts welcome! TIA.
