Turbos: How Long Do They Last?

when I first purchased my 1999 9-3, several people pointed out to me that the turbocharger generally does not last as long as the engine itself (but that the engine is still driveable even after the turbo "burns out eventually"). Is there any truth to this? While it may have been true of older turbo designs, is it still true of Saab's more modern Ecopower turbochargers? Also, I just have the base engine, not the HOT or Viggen turbo, so might this engine/turbo last a bit longer?
