I forgot the most vital part: In the old turbos, one was cautioned to allow (as one poster has said) time for it to cool down for a minute, especially if you just drove up to a parking place after a "hot run".
This caution were necessary as, like any moving part, the turbo requires lubrication. If you shut down a hot engine/turbo, a certain amount of the (then uncirculating) oil would burn inside the turbo. This produced a residue (like inside your chimney if you have a fireplace).
In due course, many premature shut-downs later, these burn residues would build up to the point where the oil would no longer circulate properly or at all. Then, great plumes of blue smoke would accompany a crashing sound and the part simply failed; blades smashing like a jet engine blades would smash if you threw in a Canada Goose.
Of course there are many variables: What oil where you using? How old/dirty was it? What was the ouside temperature? What was the temperature of the engine/oil/turbo? How many times did you let the engine shut down prematurely? Had you EVER, taken the turbo in for a simple retuning/rebalance and coke-removal? Was your turbo's oil line ever crimped by hitting it on a rock on a rough road?
I never abused the operating instructions for this, one of the first turbos and so it was the sum total of other failures (air conditioning, fuel distribution; exhaust system; heater core; rad; broken tie-rod end; paint) that beat me over the long haul with my first Saab turbo.
But I never got over the fun of driving this car with Hakkepellitta tires in the winter, simply blowing away *all* comers as if they were merely Detroit trash, notchy Saab shifter and all. (This was in the days when Detroit was producing the worst clunkers of all time and the Japanese had NO fast cars at all.)
I became a Saaber. A true believer.
Hey; life would be no fun at all if no-one took a chance on new technologies!
