The results of this survey is in number of "claims per 100 cars". Several factors can skew these numbers.
One claim or defect maybe a slightly soiled sunvisor or a noisy engine bearing (there is no weighting for severity of the defect).
Buyers of "premium" cars may be more likely to make claims of defects (their expectations tend to be higher).
The vehicle brand with a low number of total vehicles may show an artifically high or low number of claims (due to sampling error).
A few poorly prepared vehicles will result in a high number of claims ('lemon' vehicles spoil the results).
Studies like this are common, and commonly inaccurate. Whether it be JD Powers or AAA or someone else, the results of surveys have more to do with the questions asked, and how they are tabulated, than with the quality of the cars.
