First off, thanks for the correction. I should have known that.
Second, the What Car article, although reported in The Independent, is pretty sparse on details; very sparse indeed, and in rating second hand cars to buy, What Car gave a '97 Saab 900 a very fair shake.
Here's what they said:
Saab 900 2.0I 5dr
1997/P 40,000 miles
Dealer £6595 Private £6095
A curious mix OF the excellent and the indifferent, the 900 is underrated and undersold. It is the only hatchback exec with bomb-proof build quality and mechanicals that are good for 200,000 miles. The quality of trim, seating, electricals, paint and switchgear are all superb and there’s also Saab’s emphasis on safety. However, the car is let down badly by stodgy handling and a poor ride. You’ll find plenty of 900s from all sources, but Saab dealers are pricey. Try the better used dealers or even the supermarts for the odd cheaper example. Consider only immaculate cars with full service history.
For Individuality, long lifespan, sensible prices, availability
Against Indifferent handling, compromised ride quality
Verdict Distinctive contender that will run and run. And keep running
