They've done what they did with the VR6. With the VR6, they made an engine small enough that it could fit (barely) in the existing engine bay previously occupied by a transverse 4. With a brilliant, beautiful design.
The W8 just continues that design tradition. It's effectively 2 V-4 (a Saaber dissing a V-4... for shame... :) )engines, side by side. So, they've made a narrow, short 8 cyl fit in the same space as was previously occupied by either the 1.8T 4 cyl or the Audi-based V-6... I think it's pretty cool. Engine design and innovation has been so stagnant for so long (look under the hood of anything American. Your grandparents had practically the same technology & design).
My VR6 was easy to maintain - plus the fact that it really needed no maintenance...
