It all happened a couple of years before my first visit here, and I was only going by what friends have told me, but your message prompted me to delve a little further.
I stand corrected - it was 04.50 - 05.00 on Sunday 3 September, and only emergency traffic and public transport was permitted between 01.00 and 06.00.
A 90 km/h speed limit was introduced on motorways (previously unrestricted, and later increased to 110 km/h), and the other limits temporarily reduced by 10 km/h.
Parked cars had to be moved to the correct side of the road by midnight on the Sunday.
However, I can't find any mention of a gradual return to the road according to license plate number.
By the way, in 1967 there were only around 2 million vehicles registered - now that figure is about double.
Of course, they could have done it more gently, over a period, with the '...0' registrations changing one week, '...1' the next week, and so on ;-)
