I learned to drive on a 1975 99LE. I'd like to think that saabs had something to do with me studying industrial design, I was just always so intrigued at the overall design, and when working on them I'm always grinning and saying to myself 'there, somebody was using his head for something other than a hat rack'.
To me, the original 9K's are a brilliant, timeless piece of industrial design. I still like the interiors better than just about any new car I can think of. Form follows function.
Yes, they can be maddening, and they are misunderstood and not for everybody.
Oh, one other thing. I've been in two horrific accidents in saabs. Both times I walked away with the worst of my injuries being a two inch scratch on my shin where my legs swung up thru the underside of the lower dash (I was stopped, rear ended by a Cadillac doing about 40 mph). The other drivers were mangled pretty badly.
It's not a question of if you'll be in accident...it's when.
Then there is the uniqueness factor. Saabs are still about the only car you can recognize from 300 yards away.
Don't get me wrong, I like LOTS of other cars, in fact i'm still crazy about anything with an engine. I think Mitsubishi cars are very underrated, and the Eclipse's are pretty nifty looking little coupes (except for that gawd awful filler cap), buuuuut...you can't swing a Crescent wrench without hitting five of 'em. Plus i'm over 6'5", and I'd be worried if I sat in an Eclipse i'd have to dig it out of my a** crack after I stood up. Saabs are made by large white people like myself, so everything fits :)
