I've seen similar concerns on three different BBs I frequent. The groups are extremely dissimilar in many ways: this board, the VWVortex board, and the First generation Firebird listserv. Pretty much everyone on all three sources has gone on about how European drivers are so much safer than we are in the US. I thought it was true as well, but all I had to go on was empirical evidence and the word of a bunch of Europeans who frequent these sites :-)
So with the help of a German co-worker I looked up German road fatalities. Their equivalent of the DOT has a nice table (and is easier to search than the DOT). Here are the figures for 1998 (what I found at DOT):
Germany: 7,792 people killed, 1.984 fatalities/100 million miles (converted from 1 billion kilometers)
USA: 41.471 people killed (that's a lot of folks!), 1.6 fatalities per 100 million miles
I've got to admit, that surprised me a bit. And while it doesn't change my mind about needing better driver training in the States, it does make me feel a little better...
