I'll put in a plug for the Liberty. I have a 2005 KJ Liberty CRD that I absolutely love. The interior ergonomics are awful, the seats are the worst, and the materials are crap. The rear seats fold flat, and even though it's short it can haul a decent amount of stuff.
Off road capabilities are better than the competition, the turning radius is incredible. The visibility is pretty good. It's easy to drive and park. Although it has a transfer case, it also has an all time four wheel drive option that I basically leave it in all winter.
I have no idea about the power or fuel mileage with the gas engine. What makes it for me with ours is the diesel engine. It has great around town drivability (highway passing is not great), gets decent mileage (~22 around town/~28 highway), it can tow. etc. etc.
Even though it doesn't really fit our family anymore, I want to hang on to it forever because it's a good solid utility vehicle. I never thought I would feel that way about a liberty, I've always loved XJ Cherokee so much and hated that they killed it for the goofy looking KJ.
