The Subarus I drove extensively were iirc, 2009 Forester, 2008 Legacy Wagon, 2004 Forester, 2001 Outback (V6).

Of those, the older Forester was the best in my recollection. The 2001 Outback was not bad, had to drive it in a blizzard also, but I did find (not in the blizzard) that the 4 speed autobox was very slow to kick down on the highway... like I would have slowly already passed the car I wanted to pass quicker, and then it would drop down and go like a rocket, but 2-3-4 seconds late... may have been that particular car? who knows? But I found the newer ones also were slow to kick down and needed it all the time to pass quickly. They really didn't suit my driving style at all. They are quick off the line and handle fine around the city (except the newer forester, that one handled terribly all the time)... it is the highway driving where they were not great for me... my wife agreed... but we are spoiled with saabs! I forget the exact revs, but I think it was up more around 3500+ cruising with the newer legacy and forester... this was years ago. We have a c900 with autobox so driving them back to back, highway revs were about the same... but the c900 kicked down faster... I suspect the subie 4 speed autoboxes are less fragile than the c900 ones though!! We know someone who had one fail in a ~2000 Outback at higher miles, but I think that is fairly uncommon.
