I tried the AVC-R on my other car for awhile but the darn ecu was sensing part throttle boost deviations and threw it into limp mode. The AVC-R is great because you can easily set boost by overall number, or change it based on RPM, and vary it by gear. The thing about changing boost by gear is great because you really don't want as much boost in 1st gear on front drive cars.
The downside is that it doesn't detect knocking and it's expensive. It will attempt to maintain whatever boost you request, even if it blows your engine! I don't think you'd want to crank boost up past 22psi, or so. For the cost of the avc-r ($400) you might as well pay someone and get your ecu upgraded properly.
If you do get the avc-r, I recommend setting it to whatever you have your MBC set at. The great thing is the avc-r will maintain constant boost (within reason) to redline, while most mbc's will taper boost to redline, due to increased pressure in the exhaust manifold.
