OK, I understand the thing about mean piston speed, my simple point was that the 2.3 is a pretty mainstream design for its time(disregarding the turbo) - not unusually long-stroke. Seems to gbet the job done, especially with an auto gearbox in the equation.
Out of interest -
- the Aston Martin 3-litre straight six in the DB2/4 had the same bore and stroke measurements as the Saab 2-litre. It made 140 bhp at 5,000 rpm. Later versions went to 165 bhp.
- 40 years ago I bought a Honda S800 with a race-inspired engine which would rev to 8,500 and made maximum power at 8,000 rpm. Maximum torque was developed at 6,000 rpm. And it was under-square - bore 60mm, stroke 70mm. Like all good jokes (and it was a good one) it's the way you tell them.
