If you go with higher quality wheels that what you have, or step up to magnesium (real "mag" wheels :-), then yea... you can save weight. No doubt if you introduce enough variables such as different wheels, tire sizes, tires, etc you can create any test results you want. Point of order on the earlier post: That Honda test would only be valid if they went with a +1 and kept things real. Sticking with the "same width" introduces different diameters and makes the test bogus.
I was assuming that the OP is considering 17" or 18" in a particular wheel... in which case the 18" will be heavier, as will the same tire in a particular size. If you stick with a +1 concept, the 18" tire is typically 3 to 4 lbs heavier. St you have the added wheel weight, and the added tire weight, all unsprung, and it's all farther from the hub center.
