Living in France will give you so many great car choices that we can't get here. As an owner of a mint '89 Peugeot 405 Mi16 (which I love as much as my Viggen) and having driven the new 406, I would highly recommend it. There is a great wagon version of it too, with a variety of 4 cylinder engines and a V6. Peugeot also has some of the best diesel engines in the world too, and considering fuel there is in the $5/gallon, range, looking into the new 2.2 HDi engine they have might be worth a look too.
Since you're looking for a family car, my other choices (apart from Saabs) would be the Alfa 156, Renault Laguna II, or the new Rover 75 estate (though British cars in France are rare and service might be challenging).
I've become a Peugeot loyalist now that I finally found the perfect Mi16, and it has a great balance of ride, comfort, handling and so on. Had the 406 coupe been available here, I probably would have bought one. Best looking car on the road today, in my opinion!
Good luck!
Paul H.
