IMHO, AWD can actually be slower than FWD or RWD:
I've never driven a WRX of a 9-2 Aero, but I've owned a few Audi Quattros in the past, and although you get a great initial launch (much to the chagrin of the clutch), often times the RPM of the engine dogs so low that you are stuck in a very bad powerband of the engine, and that is not mentioning the weight penalty of the AWD.
My Audi quat turbo was a prime example. The combination of unflappable traction plus obscene turbo lag left me quite frustrated because the engine would be stuck in turbo lag until about 4000 RPM. With my naturally aspirated Audi, I obviously couldn't spin all four tires with 115hp, but at least I could easily slip the clutch due to the more progresive power delivery.
With either FWD or RWD you can usually spin the tires at first, and if your tires hook up quickly thereafter, you'll be right in the middle of the powerband of the engine.
It still find it amazing that my old-school 2.0L 165hp SPG has so much less turbo lag and so much more usable torque compared to that peaky 210hp 2.2L 10 valve 5 cylinder Audi turbo!
