Thanks Eric. I couldn't see how the stud/allen bolt swap makes the installation work. On my car, I get the left (driver's side) pipe up and because it's rotated counter-clockwise it initially goes up through the hole ahead of the motor mount (this is why it was hitting the fuel pump).
Now with the fuel pump out, I'm able to get the left pipe up high enough that when I rotate the whole part clockwise, the left pipe clears the front edge of the motor mount. With the left pipe sitting in the center of the motor mount, the right side is aligned with its hole but too far left. As the left pipe slides further up, the right pipe almost clears its hole, but is 1/2" to the left. At this point the flange on the left pipe is hitting the inside edge of the motor mount. If the left pipe could clear that inside edge, it would give me the extra 1/2" I need to move the right pipe to the right.
Our aftermarket pipes must be slightly off spec for them to be so difficult to install. Guess I'm going to throw in the towel and get a sleeve and some clamps!
