Hi Scott,
this is not a add on support, it is original to the chassis.
I am on the same track as Eric - pretty sure your car has the lower engine mounts. Interesting, I was not aware of this interference, but so far I have mounted this type of starter motor on 96 only with standard engine mounts. But this part of the chassis is kinda same on 95/96 and Sonett. I will keep that in mind when I remount the engine on my Sonett with that starter.
What I would do is, first try to dent in that part where it has contact. You don't want to dent that part of the solenoid because it will probably get stuck then, so starter wont function anymore.
If you can hammer in that part at the chassis, go for it, or grind away a little.
But I think I would like better to raise up the engine a bit. So if you remove the nuts on both of the front engine mounts left and right. Then put a hydraulic jack with a piece of wood under the oilpan and raise up the engine, then put maybe 2 washers / spacers on each engine mount left and right, to raise up the engine maybe about 1/4 inch. That could be enough and you wont run out of thread on the mounts then.
Hope it will work out! Fingers crossed here.
Best Regards,
Erik
