HI Everyone,
Thanks again for all the advice on my starter issue. Thought I'd post a final follow up. I ended up raising the engine by 1/4" using fender washers on the mounts. It created just enough space between the solenoid on the new starter and the engine support to slide a piece of paper between. I'll keep an eye on it in case there's enough vibration to damage the solenoid. See photo attached. Turned her over for the first time on Sat. and it fired right up. I haven’t heard a clean start like that in years!
A few follow up notes
- The starter I used was the one recommended by Charles and ErikS and bought it from https://www.classicsaabracing.com/en/v4-starter-engine-lighterstronger (they had two in stock at the time, but are now out of stock).
- I also bought an old starter from a later model Sonett III and found that the body was fatter and presented a similar issue with interference. Happy to take photos/make measurements if anyone needs it.
- The two 1/8” fender washers allowed just enough thread on the mount stud to get full engagement from the nut after reassembly. Any thicker and the threads on the nuts would not be fully engaged.
- Used a car jack and board under the oil pan to lift the engine just enough to slide the washers in. I detached the exhaust manifold for fear of cracking a weld on the exhaust when I lifted it, but not sure if that was necessary. I just know my luck would have it crack.
Thanks again to everyone for your help! Appreciate you all.
Cheers,
-Scott
