Daigle, if you can locate a Chilton's Foreign Car Repair Manual Vol I (German, Swedish, & Italian Cars) published early 70's, it has a great Saab section including a good deal on competition modification, and identification of factory high-performance parts. Unfortunately no specific reference to HP gain. However, you will surely feel the difference. My own modifications to 1.5L in my '69 wagon are 2-bbl carb (32-36DGAV, these should be available new, but the 2bbl manifold may be hard to come by) and 2" exhaust with free-flow muffler. These were done at different times and each made a major improvement. I would suggest these and Pertronix ignition as easier and more cost-effective first steps before going inside the engine. If they do not help enough you can do the camshaft, bigger valves, higher compression, custom cylinder head work, on and on as much as your wallet will stand. The external mods do not affect the basic engine, but any time you go inside (camshaft etc) you risk opening a can of worms that you should be prepared to deal with, in that haphazardly altering one component without changing associated ones to keep the whole thing in proper balance may not yield the expected result. I do not pretend to know about (for example) racing cams in V4s, and if folks who do claim a big result from a simple camshaft change and nothing else, well and good. But I can say that in many engines a camshaft alone will do little or nothing (except make it idle badly) unless you improve engine breathing with other changes to valves, heads, etc. Start with the easy stuff, you may not need more.
