Stoney, i had the same problem.
My exhaust system was stock but the mufflers had rusted away.
I replaced them with Flowmaster ovals ( the smallest piped ones they make. I believe they are for a Suzuki).
The pipes are off set. Inlet to one corner and outlet centered. They fit ok after I had two short ess bent pipes made.
Mieneke, local $10.
Great performance. But like your car, too loud to carry on a conversation.
My cure to date:
I insulated the car. I put Great stuff foam into the body/ pan joint in the very back of the car. ( Be careful not to use too much! Great stuff will push the fiberglass out!)
And I used basement , water resistant , sound deadening insulation under the rear upholstry.
Then added two ( home made from 90 deg bends) turn downs on the exhaust tips.
We have found that on cars that do not pass the SCCA sound limits. Most times they will if the exhaust is diverted down to the track. Or inward. Pointed into the center line of the car.
Results? Still too loud for radio listening ( unless it's real loud!).
But conversations are possible.
Hope this helps.
Let us know what solution you come up with for the MSS pipe.
