I agree that the person to call is Jack Lawrence. He's certainly helped me in the past.
A note about the suggestion of adding a cam and light lifters alone/together... but apart from the valves etc...
In general, when changing one portion of a valvetrain you should take careful note of how much wear there is on the other bits and pieces. Because the valvetrain is a long series of bits and pieces all sliding across one another they tend to "wear-in" to each other... as well as wear out.
As the song goes... sorta:
the camshaft is connected to the lifters,
the lifters are connected to the pushrods,
the pushrods are connected to the rocker arms,
the rocker arms pivot ont he rocker shaft,
the rocker arms are connected to the valves,
the valves ride within the valve guides
and so on and so on depending on how detailed you wnat to get.
So, for the bolt-on easy stuff do as was suggested... electronic ignition, electric fan, two barrel carb, and MSS exhaust.
When you think you want more and go for the cam you have to remove the engine from the car and the heads from the engine anyway, go ahead and do the whole valvetrain. But I admit, it is a lot more money that way. I'm living it right now on the engine I am rebuilding. Jack Lawrence got a big chunk of my paycheck last year.
