Everything else being equal, and assuming you engine can take advantage of the higher octane. If the engine is designed for higher octane, and adjusts for lower octane by retarding the ignition, etc., then you are losing efficiency with lower octane gas. IIRC higher octane fuel has a little less "energy", but because you can squeeze it more, it can produce more power. If your engine isn't designed for high octane, then you may lose power, and get lower mileage.
